The GPT Group is one of Australia’s largest diversified listed property groups. With a portfolio of offices, business parks, shopping centers and logistics facilities, GPT has AU$18.7 billion of assets under management and more than 37,000 investors.
GPT has a strong focus on sustainability, and its growing reporting requirements were creating a significant amount of work for employees. They relied largely on spreadsheets, which was time consuming and didn’t provide the detailed insight they were after.
GPT adopted Envizi’s Sustainability Reporting solution to bring together GPT’s diverse sustainability data together in a single system of record.
Envizi for Sustainability gave GPT powerful tools to manage and quickly report on data, set and track performance targets, as well as monitor and benchmark performance across building attribute and utility data.
“For the first time, we had a full and accurate accounting of the fundamentals driving our sustainability performance that was easily accessible to people across the company.”

Envizi for GPT
GPT Group leads the way in sustainability with help from Envizi
The GPT Group invests in sustainability for one simple reason: it delivers financial value to investors, customers and stakeholder communities. Since deploying Envizi for Sustainability, GPT has dramatically reduced the time it spends on reporting, and increased accountability of its sustainability programs.
GPT is one of a small handful of organizations that lead the global Dow Jones Sustainability Index and appear in the top ten of the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark. Since 2005, GPT has posted a string of positive environmental results across its portfolio of 45 commercial and retail properties, including:
- a 38% drop in water intensity (liters of H20 use per square meter)
- an improvement in waste diverted from landfill from 29% to 46%
- a 28% drop in energy intensity (kWh energy use per square meter)
- a 36% drop in CO2 intensity (kg of CO2 emitted per square meter)
- a $15.9 million annual saving on its combined gas and electricity bills in 2011 alone.
GPT is a voluntary reporter to the Carbon Disclosure Project, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark and NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System). It is also obliged to report its carbon, energy and sustainability performance under a number of Australian compliance regimes.
With three corporate portfolios and three different property funds all reporting an increasing number of sustainability metrics, GPT’s reporting requirements were creating a significant amount of work for employees. Employees relied largely on spreadsheets to measure, manage and report the sustainability performance of building assets covering 2 million square meters of floor space. This was time consuming and only allowed for limited insight.
“The continuing use of spreadsheets to manage non-financial sustainability data such as energy, waste, water and emissions had become untenable,” says GPT’s National Sustainability Manager, Bruce Precious. “We had major headaches because we were using several standalone legacy systems that held irreconcilable data locked inside separate information silos.”
GPT transforms data management and reporting for Envizi
In 2010, GPT sought tenders for an enterprise sustainability software solution. After considering a number of providers, the Group selected Envizi.
Envizi brings GPT’s diverse sustainability data together in a single system of record. It gives the Group powerful tools to manage and report on data, set and track performance targets, and monitor and benchmark performance across building attribute and utility data.
“The technology’s immediate appeal was its ability to simplify and speed up data capture, while giving us the power to generate financial-grade reports on demand at a much higher frequency than before,” says Precious.
Confident decision-making based on accurate data
At the core of Envizi lies a sophisticated data-management engine that enables secure, real-time data capture and file-processing ability of source data. The platform’s powerful data assurance features, such as exception reporting, automated error checking and audit trails provide greater confidence for reporting and decision-making – a high priority for GPT.
“Now we have one source of truth for sustainability data management,” says Precious. “And because Envizi provides complete data logs and audit trails, our auditors can easily check and verify our sustainability metrics quickly and transparently.”
A boost in sustainability programs
Envizi enables GPT to track the progress of its sustainability initiatives and demonstrate their impact, helping GPT maintain its sustainability leadership position and achieve its corporate strategy of “creating and sustaining environments that enrich people’s lives”.
“Our building managers can benchmark their building’s energy, water, waste and carbon emissions intensity against the performance of any and all buildings across the company’s property portfolio,” says Precious. “This brings real accountability to our sustainability programs at all levels of the company.”
