NatWest adopts a data-driven approach to Energy and Environmental Management

NatWest (formerly the Royal Bank of Scotland) is a UK-based multinational banking and financial services company headquartered in Edinburgh.  The organisation has operations across the world, and in the UK operates from circa 2,776 sites including retail branches, a number of data centres, processing centres and offices.

NatWest has made great strides in achieving their goal of being a sustainable bank and has been the recipient of numerous external awards for their achievements such as Sustainability Team of the Year in 2017 as well as gained specific recognition for their staff engagement programme.

Seeking a better approach

Late in 2016, NatWest was searching for a comprehensive approach to managing energy performance and environmental reporting.  Ideally from a single vendor.  The company aimed to:

  • Reduce energy consumption
  • Reduce energy costs
  • Improve data quality and reporting accuracy
  • And improve the way they engaged with both internal and external stakeholders around energy and environmental management

NatWest was looking for assistance and tools to enable them to adopt a data-driven approach, the back bone of which was reliable and robust data.  Their incumbent systems and approaches which included a reliance on spreadsheets, multiple data systems and suppliers, were leading to slow reporting and problems with data integrity.

An innovative approach

NatWest’s challenges were addressed using an innovative combination of a services team utilising industry leading data and analytics software developed by Envizi. EcoAct were able to offer the full complement of services required but also a unique proposition: an embedded team within the NatWest organization.

This model consolidates energy, data and reporting services into one set of expert managers sitting within the Bank’s own team. As a result of this model, EcoAct is uniquely placed to understand the day to day challenges and work alongside the NatWest team to achieve their goals.

Envizi’s data and analytics software underpins EcoAct’s services mode. The integrated software platform transforms energy, sustainability and asset data into powerful insights.  EcoAct have deployed the system across the entire NatWest portfolio, capturing and analysing data ranging from electricity to waste data from over 5,000 locations in 57 countries.  EcoAct utilize the system to conduct utility expense management, sustainability reporting, and energy management tasks – all from a single system of record accessible to the entire organization for the purposes of analysis, reporting and engagement.

Saving energy + costs

This solution has been in place since mid-2017 and has already delivered outstanding results.  NatWest’s foresight in deploying this innovative embedded service + software solution has seen efficiency and commercial returns for NatWest: not only has the burden of managing complex suppliers and systems been alleviated, significant cost savings and efficiency improvements have been realized.

  • Investment in the technology and management of the whole system by the embedded team has realised a total of £2.4million in savings and cost avoidance during the initial 11-month period.
  • A more efficient billing validation process alone has resulted in over £1.8 million in cost avoidance.
  • A reduction in energy consumption through more effective management of systems has supported the Bank in being on track with their energy reduction targets.
  • Insightful exception reporting has realised at least £128,000 of energy savings beyond their BAU energy savings so far.
  • Data collection, systems and reporting processes, and management thereof have been streamlined.
  • A programmatic, proactive and consistent approach to compliance, environment reporting and performance reporting across all levels of the business has resulted in £402,500 reduction in compliance expenditure during 2017, with savings rising year on year.
  • Clarity on the quality and coverage of data is providing stakeholders with confidence in reporting outputs.
  • Consistency in reporting has been achieved and the provision of performance feedback in a meaningful and timely way enabled.

Visibility of financial reporting has been improved.

A bright future

As the benefits of a data-driven approach to energy and environmental management crystallize, NatWest is seeking more granular data on the performance of its real estate assets and the Bank has plans to roll out more high frequency metering across it’s organisation, something only made manageable by the capacity of Envizi to collate extensive data. This innovative partnership and system means EcoAct are well placed to act on continued insights and deliver significant additional value to the NatWest business.
