Founded in the 1920s as a family business, Metcash Limited is Australia’s leading wholesale distribution and marketing company, specializing in grocery, fresh produce, liquor, hardware, automotive parts and other fast moving consumer goods.
Metcash needed to streamline data capture and eliminate manual data capture by integrating with its SAP system as well as key utility suppliers. The company also wanted a solution to help manage its reporting process for sustainability schemes including NGERS.
Metcash adopted the Envizi’s Sustainability Reporting solution, which included a unique piece of integration work with its invoice scanning bureau.
Envizi brings together Metcash’s environmental data – including energy, fuel, water and carbon emissions data – in a single system of record. It gives the company powerful tools to manage and report on data, set and track performance targets and monitor and benchmark performance.
“We like [Envizi’s] technology and their service, and Envizi will be invaluable for assessing the payback on our operational and strategic energy-efficiency programs moving forward.”

Envizi supports Metcash’s ambitious sustainability targets
As part of its company-wide sustainability strategy, Metcash Trading – a leading distributor of groceries and other fast moving consumer goods – is using Envizi to support energy and water-saving programs that could save the company millions of dollars in the cost of doing business.
Endorsed and driven by the company’s chief executive officer and senior management, Metcash’s sustainability strategy includes ambitious targets and projects relating to environment, society and governance. Key goals include better measuring and managing energy use and carbon emissions.
“Environmental sustainability is taken seriously at Metcash,” says Louise Rhodes, Group Sustainability Manager, who leads the sustainability strategy across four business groups. Rhodes says the company views sustainability similarly to risk management and business continuity – critical to the success of the business.
Metcash relied on manual data capture to track the progress of its sustainability strategy, and to meet its reporting obligations under programs including the Australian Government’s National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme (NGERS). The company wanted to improve its reporting capabilities and streamline data capture by integrating with its SAP system as well as key utility suppliers.
Turning insight into action with Envizi
Metcash selected Envizi to manage, track and evaluate its environmental initiatives. Envizi is the cloud-based enterprise software solution that brings together Metcash’s environmental data – including energy, fuel, water and carbon emissions data – in a single system of record.
It gives the organization powerful tools to manage and report on data, set and track performance targets and monitor and benchmark performance across building attribute and utility data.
Dramatic reductions in energy and water use
Metcash is using Envizi to assess the impact of new capital works designed to reduce energy and water use at its nine heaviest consumption sites. It will also use Envizi to track energy and cost savings from a new lighting modification pilot at one of its Campbells Cash and Carry stores. Metcash anticipates the lighting pilot will cut annual power use by 72,266 kwh – or 58.75 tonnes of Co2e (carbon dioxide equivalent). It also expects to slash AU$8,670 from the store’s annual power bill and achieve payback within three to four years.
“If the pilots prove successful, Metcash will consider rolling out a national capital works program that could save us millions of dollars in lower power and water bills each year,” says Rhodes. “Our key focus is to make energy savings because electricity represents a majority of the company’s carbon footprint.”
Improved reporting capabilities
Envizi has given Metcash powerful new reporting capabilities that reduce the time it takes to generate reports, and enable the company to transform data into actionable insights.
Rhodes and the Metcash executive team are using Envizi to generate near real-time business reports on power, fuel, water use and carbon emissions across all 75 Metcash-owned business entities. The company also uses Envizi to meet its reporting obligations under NGERS.
“Envizi took the hard work out of reporting to the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System,” says Rhodes.
An optimization platform for the future
Amidst a business and sustainability landscape that is constantly changing, Envizi gives Metcash a dynamic sustainability management platform that will support its needs into the future.
Envizi allows Metcash to verify the impact, payback period and return on investment of its efficiency and environmental initiatives that are essential for business transformation in a low-carbon economy.
“We like [Envizi’s] technology and their service, and Envizi will be invaluable for assessing the payback on our operational and strategic energy-efficiency programs moving forward,” says Rhodes.
